Polar Molecule Vs Non-Polar Molecule
There are many differences between a Polar Molecule and a Non-Polar Molecule and a lot of people stay confused about the two terms. The basic difference between the Polar Molecule and the Non-Polar Molecule lies in the fact that the molecules have adifferent arrangement. In addition to the difference mentioned above, another important difference between the two types of themolecule is that the polar molecules have an electric field charge associated with them whereas the non-polar molecules do not have any electrical field charge associated with them.
The next difference between the two molecules is that the charges between the polar molecules are not evenly distributed whereas, in the non-polar molecule, there is no uneven distribution of the electrons around the molecule. This is one of the reasons why the electric field charge is only associated with Polar Molecules. The even distribution of charges in the non-polar molecule cancels the impact of each other and thus it has a net zero electrical field charge.
Let us understand the same with an example, in the water molecule, there are excess of electrons around oxygen and there are deficient electrons around hydrogen which create a polarity. Other examples of polar molecules are Ammonia, Sulfur Dioxide, and Hydrogen Sulfide. Whereas if we consider a Carbon Dioxide molecule, the molecule doesn’t have any charge or electric field associated with the same as the charge is evenly distributed between the molecules. Other examples of a non-polar molecule are toluene, neon, helium and gasoline. These do not have any charge and gasoline is also used as a solvent for certain elements and compounds.
